The series of DuckTales first aired on 18th September 1987. Disney broadcasted 65 episdoes over a 13 week period. The first five (one weeks worth) opened with Donald Duck leaving his three nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie with his Uncle Scrooge and enlisting in the Navy. At first Scrooge wasn't happy looking after the nephews until the managed to prove their worth preventing the Beagle boys from stealing from Scrooge's number one dime. Characters from the comic books made their TV debut including Gyro Gearloose, Magica de Spell, Flintheart Glomgold and Glittering Goldie and also introduced new characters Mrs. Beakly, her niece Webby, pilot Launchpad McQuack, Scrooge's butler Duckworth and Doofus Drake.

The series followed the first five episodes with 60 episodes including treasure hunts, thief-foiling and general humourous adventuring strongly reminesent of Carl Bark's orginal work. DuckTales was such a hit, that series two, a further 35 episodes were produced in 1990. New characters Bubba Duck and Fenton Crackshell and his alter ego Gizmoduck were introduced. DuckTales had reached 100 episodes, a first for Disney and a feature film was released into cinemas at the end of 1990, titled Treasure of the Lost Lamp.

DuckTales made many references to popular culture including references to Indiana Jones, Greek mythology, Sherlock Holmes, Shakespeare,  Jack the ripper and James Bond.

DuckTales recieved a franchise of merchandise including comic books,  three video games, and a toy line. 

In 2015 Disney XD announced the revival of the show with new animation and a new cast. The new series debuted on August 12th 2017.
